Whoever Takes the Son Gets it All

Sorry I didn't have tons of time to write an email this week but I just want to leave you guys with this darling poem that I love so much.  :)

"Years ago, there was a very wealthy man who, with his devoted young
son, shared a passion for art collecting. Together they traveled
around the world, adding only the finest art treasures to their
collection. Priceless works by Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet and many
others adorned the walls of the family estate. The widowed, elder man
looked on with satisfaction as his only child became an experienced
art collector. The son’s trained eye and sharp business mind caused
his father to beam with pride as they dealt with art collectors around
the world.

As winter approached, war engulfed the nation, and the young man left
to serve his country. After only a few short weeks, his father
received a telegram. His beloved son was missing in action. The art
collector anxiously awaited more news, fearing he would never see his
son again. Within days, his fears were confirmed. The young man had
died while rushing a fellow soldier to a medic.

Distraught and lonely, the old man faced the upcoming Christmas
holidays with anguish and sadness. The joy of the season, a season
that he and his son had so looked forward to, would visit his house no
longer. On Christmas morning, a knock on the door awakened the
depressed old man. As he walked to the door, the masterpieces of art
on the walls only reminded him that his son was not coming home.

As he opened the door, he was greeted by a soldier with a large
package in his hand. He introduced himself to the man by saying, "I
was a friend of your son. I was the one he was rescuing when he died.
May I come in for a few moments? I have something to show you." As the
two began to talk, the soldier told of how the man’s son had told
everyone of his, not to mention his father’s, love of fine art. "I’m
an artist," said the soldier, "and I want to give you this." As the
old man unwrapped the package, the paper gave way to reveal a portrait
of the son.

Though the world would never consider it the work of a genius, the
painting featured the young man’s face in striking detail. Overcome
with emotion, the man thanked the soldier, promising to hang the
picture over the fireplace. A few hours later, after the soldier had
departed, the old man set about his task.

True to his word, the painting went well above the fireplace, pushing
aside thousands of dollars of paintings. And then the man sat in his
chair and spent Christmas gazing at the gift he had been given. During
the days and weeks that followed, the man realized that even though
his son was no longer with him, the boy’s life would live on because
of those he had touched. He would soon learn that his son had rescued
dozens of wounded soldiers before a bullet stilled his caring heart.

As the stories of his son’s gallantry continued to reach him, fatherly
pride and satisfaction began to ease the grief. The painting of his
son soon became his most prized possession, far eclipsing any interest
in the pieces for which museums around the world clamored. He told his
neighbors it was the greatest gift he had ever received.

The following spring, the old man became ill and passed away. The art
world was in anticipation!

Unmindful of the story of the man’s only son, but in his honor, those
paintings would be sold at an auction. According to the will of the
old man, all of the art works would be auctioned on Christmas day, the
day he had received his greatest gift. The day soon arrived and art
collectors from around the world gathered to bid on some of the
world’s most spectacular paintings. Dreams would be fulfilled this
day; greatness would be achieved as many claim "I have the greatest
collection." The auction began with a painting that was not on any
museum’s list. It was the painting of the man’s son. The auctioneer
asked for an opening bid. The room was silent.

"Who will open the bidding with $100?" he asked. Minutes passed. No
one spoke. From the back of the room came, "Who cares about that
painting? It’s just a picture of his son. Let’s forget it and go on to
the good stuff."

More voices echoed in agreement. "No, we have to sell this one first,"
replied the auctioneer. "Now, who will take the son?" Finally, a
friend of the old man spoke, "Will you take ten dollars for the
painting? That’s all I have. I knew the boy, so I’d like to have it."

"I have ten dollars. Will anyone go higher?" called the auctioneer.
After more silence, the auctioneer said, "Going once, going twice.
Gone." The gavel fell, cheers filled the room and someone exclaimed,
"Now we can get on with it and we can bid on these treasures!"

The auctioneer looked at the audience and announced the auction was
over. Stunned disbelief quieted the room. Someone spoke up and asked,
"What do you mean it’s over? We didn’t come here for a picture of some
old guy’s son. What about all of these paintings? There are millions
of dollars of art here! I demand that you explain what’s going on
here!" The auctioneer replied, "It’s very simple. According to the
will of the father, whoever takes the son…gets it all."

Puts things into perspective doesn’t it? Just as those art collectors
discovered on that Christmas Day, the message is still the same: the
love of a Father, a Father whose greatest joy came from His Son, who
went away and gave His life rescuing others. And because of that
Father’s love, whoever takes the Son, gets it all. LOVE YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!!

The best Surprise of My Life

Good news:  My new comp is Hermana Webb from California and she is absolutely darling. Like we are already such good friends and I love her SO much!!  Other good news, surprise surprise Romina got baptized!!  This week Hermana Tapullima and I decided to back off trying to get her baptized since Marcelo still hasn't received his papers.  But on Thursday out of nowhere Romina says to us, "Hermanas, I want to be bapitzed this Saturday.  I couldn't sleep all night last night because I couldn't stop thinking about baptism, so I feel like it is the right thing to do and I am ready to be baptized!"  On Saturday December 12th we held Romina's baptism and it was one of the best days of my entire life.  I could just feel the love so strong that our Heavenly Father has for Romina and the Inalef family, and it was a beautiful day.  A moment that has changed my life forever.  Saying goodbye to their family was one of the hardest things I have had to do in my entire life.  They will forever have such a special place in my heart and I thank my Heavenly Father a million times over for having let me know them these few months and for letting me be apart of this first great step in helping the beautiful Inalef family become a beautiful eternal family.  I am of few words today because I am still pretty sad about leaving, but I know that the only way we can progress in this life is if we enfront the hard changes in our lives with a positive attitude and an optimistic outlook.  Understanding that everything that happens is part of God's plan.  As Marcelo Inalef told me last night when I said my goodbyes, there is a reason that the Lord only wanted me there in el Bolson 3 months.  Only He knows the reason but I need to trust in Him and continue on with my faith, hope, and happiness. I can't even express the great love and gratitude that I have for the Inalef family.

I love you all so very much.

The Touch of the Master's Hand

The work is going well here in el Bolson and next we will be holding a baptism for our investigator Isaias!  Isaias is 9 years old and I met him about 2 months ago.  We have been wroking with him every now and then but it's been a little difficult because his mom, Marta Cayo, is always working!  Marta is a less active member but she has now committed to go to church every Sunday in order to support Isaias as well as help herself which is great!!  So next Saturday Isaias will be getting baptized!  Now here is the scoop on Romina, she is ready to be baptized, but the only thing we are wating for are Marcelo's papers so he can baptize her! Marcelo has had all his interviews and is ready, but now we just need to receive the papers that will then give him permission to baptize Romina!  So all is well here and we are working hard!
Bueno, now is the Christmas season when we start thinking a little more about Jesus Christ, his birth, and the great blessing that He is in our life.  I love this time of year and I love my Savior Jesus Christ so I would like to share one of my favorite poems about him.  It is called "The Touch of the Master's Hand" by Myra Brooks Welch:

’Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer
Thought it scarcely worth his while
To waste much time on the old violin,
But held it up with a smile:
“What am I bidden, good folks,” he cried,
“Who’ll start the bidding for me?”
“A dollar, a dollar”; then, “Two!” “Only two?
Two dollars, and who’ll make it three?
Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice;
Going for three—” But no,
From the room, far back, a gray-haired man
Came forward and picked up the bow;
Then, wiping the dust from the old violin,
And tightening the loose strings,
He played a melody pure and sweet
As a caroling angel sings.
The music ceased, and the auctioneer,
With a voice that was quiet and low,
Said, “What am I bid for the old violin?”
And he held it up with the bow.
“A thousand dollars, and who’ll make it two?
Two thousand! And who’ll make it three?
Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice,
And going, and gone!” said he.
The people cheered, but some of them cried,
“We do not quite understand
What changed its worth.” Swift came the reply:
“The touch of a master’s hand.”
And many a man with life out of tune,
And battered and scarred with sin,
Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd,
Much like the old violin.
A “mess of pottage,” a glass of wine,
A game—and he travels on.
He’s “going” once, and “going” twice,
He’s “going” and almost “gone.”
But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd
Never can quite understand
The worth of a soul and the change that’s wrought
By the touch of the Master’s hand.

Each and every one of us are like this old violin.  We are battered and scarred with skin, and often times with our lives out of tune.  But with the touch of the Master's hand, the Master being Jesus Christ, we can become someone incredible.  He heals our wounds and scars, making us clean from sin.  He changes our worth, by helping us be better than we ever could without Him.  The Lord is everything, and He makes all the difference.

I hope you all have a wonderful wonderful week and realize the beautiful music that the Lord plays in our lives through his grace and mercy like that old violin.

Next week are transfers so we will see if I stay here in el Bolson or if they move me to another area, which will probably be my last area!  But I will talk to y'all next week and I love you all sooooo much! SO MUCH!

Quote of the week:

Gracias

Happy (late) Thanksgiving!! I hope you all were able to have a wonderful Thanksgiving day full of family, food, and gratitude.  Argentina doesn't celebrate that holiday so the only thing we did to celebrate was draw "hand turkeys" (keep in mind there isn't much you can do as a missionary haha) and say what we are thankful for haha.  I also made a big breakfast with pancakes, eggs, and fruit for my comp and the hermana leaders but other than that nothing too crazy!  We also ended the night with grilled sausage, chicken, blood sausage, meat, salad, potatoes, and fanta!  Romina and her fam brought it all by our pension that night just for fun!  So that was super nice of them and with all the food they gave us it felt a little bit like Thanksgiving!

Alrighty well not too much happened this week but our investigators and less active members are doing great!  Since this week was all about being thankful, I would jus like to share one of my favorite, yet very simple, scriptures about gratitude!  Doctrine and Covenants 59:7 which says: "Thou shalt thank the Lord thy God in all things."  I have definitely come to understand that a little more while being here in the mission.  Sometimes we only thank God when everything is going right.  But when everything is going wrong, our prayers then change from "Thank you Heavenly Father for this, this, and this..."  to "Heavenly Father I need this, this, and this..."  But what we need to do is be thankful in all things.  When we are going through a hard time, we need to pray to our Father Above and say "thank you for the things this experience will teach me."  No matter what the circumstances, we truly need to be grateful.  Because if we really understand the Plan of Salvation, we will understand that everything we go through happens for a reason.  God gives us tests, trials, and hard times because he loves us.  Because through these tests, trials, and hard times, He can mold us into what He wants us to become.  Which that is to become like Him.

I am so very thankful for the blessing that my Heavenly Father has given me.  The two greatest blessings that I cherish most are my family and the Atonement of Jesus Christ.  The two cloest things I have to my heart.  I am sure you all had a moment to "count your blessings" this week but I just would like to invite all of you to say a prayer of gratitude tonight.  Don't ask for one single thing, just thank your Heavenly Father.  And thank Him as well for all the experiences both good and bad, that have made you into the very person you are today.

Quote of the week:
One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living.  We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon--instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our windows today.
-Dale Carnegie

Be grateful!  I love you all so much and I am so thankful for your support!! :)
